Thinking Historically: Characteristics of The Modern Western World
Western civilization is a very broad term used to refer to social norms, ethical values, traditional customs, belief systems, political systems and technologies that originate to Europe. Ancient Greece is the birthplace of many elements of western culture. Places in the World that are considered "the west" are Western Europe, North America, Japan and Parts of Oceania. All of the places are all connected, not physically but have similar elements. People call it "The West because all of the similar elements originated in Western Europe (France and England). The Modern West has Liberal Democracy which is a representative government, Economic Liberalism (people having the ability to make decisions), Christianity ( one of the major world religions), Separation of Church and State ( being a difference between religion and the government, everyone has to obey government laws but can participate in religious customs), Progress( always making things better) , and Human Rights with guaranteed civil liberties ( having rights and things you are entitled to).
